The cat repeller devices fall into a few different categories:
The ultrasonic devices are typically equipped with motion sensors and use high-frequency noise that scares the cats away, but cannot be heard from most humans. These devices can be powered by batteries or electricity and are often weather-resistant; their biggest advantages are that they are overly inexpensive, very easy to use, and as a rule work as they are supposed to. Their disadvantages are that the sound that they use can be heard from some humans, they are ineffective to cats that have hearing problems, and cover only limited ground.
Other variation of the ultrasonic cat repeller are the scatter guns, which can be aimed at cats, using a laser light sight, and when a trigger is pressed ultrasonic or sonic (audible) sound is emitted and scares the cats away.
The electric fences use low-voltage electricity and repel cats, but do not harm them. These fences are commercially available, but it might be costly to fence larger area and the electricity that runs through the fence can be actually dangerous to cats and other pets, according to some animal welfare organizations.
Motion sensitive water guns spray water in the general direction of the cat for a few seconds and are very effective and harmless to all animals; however, they have to be connected to a hose and can only cover smaller ground.
It is often advisable to use more than one device at the same time or use the cat repeller devices in conjunction with cat repeller substances.
